I can see the black threads in the photo, but not very distinctly. However, if they seem noticeable to you, looking at the actual swatch, then they probably would not be too attractive in the kilt -- better than a hem, though!

Looking at the picture, I have another concern about that particular fabric. It doesn't look like worsted -- it's too fuzzy. Being unfuzzy is what worsted is all about! I noticed in the sites for the billiard table cloth that all of it is wool, but NOT all of it is worsted, only the top-of-the-line is. I think it's important to have worsted wool in a kilt for many reasons. It's more comfortable -- not scratchy. It will last much longer than other wool, not only because the yarn is much more tightly twisted (which is what makes it so smooth) but also because the fibre that goes into it has a longer staple, giving the whole fabric superior strength. It will not 'pill' on the surface. It will shed water better. It will drape and fit better, 'giving' without stretching out of shape. It holds a pleat better. It's easier to tailor, which can make the end product better, as well. I think it has exactly the right amount of sheen too, though I suppose that's a matter of personal taste. To me, it's like the difference between diamonds and cubic zirconium -- or rhinestones, depending on what fabric it's being compared to! Or a chunk of coal.

I'm sorry I always get so preachy about this subject. I am just passionate about it!

I know it seems like one kind of wool is pretty much the same as another, but they all have their own qualities and are quite different!

I believe you are right to be so concerned about the material characteristics. It is an awful lot of work to put into something only to look at the finish product and say you don't like the material.

The condition of the swatch is mainly due to it being stuck in my scrap pile for about 3 years. The sample is Iwan Simonis which is on pretty much all the profesionial tables for exactly the same reasons you describe. To a passionate billiards player, what is on their table is more important than what's on them

I think using one of the deeper earth tones would be pretty good look.

    Cyndi,

The cloth swatch I have is not as fuzzy as it might appear in the photo. The feel of the cloth itself is something that I think would make a decent kilt. (Especially if you are a billiards fan!) My only real concern is with the selvedge.

Anyway, Cav, can you confirm if that peice you sent me is a worsted wool? Certainly feels like it might be.

    Aye,
    Matt
