    What a surprise!

What a surprise I had yesterday. Every so often our folk group does a concert for the local church to help them raise money for their restoration fund. In the church hall next to the church they have a professional photocopying machine that I am allowed to use to produce posters and publicity for ourselves and as we use the hall quite a bit to rehearse I have my own key to the hall. Yesterday I went around to print some publicity sheets and found the outer door open. As I opened the inner door and entered the hall I was quite taken back as I was confronted by about 40 women some sat down, some standing, who, as it turned out, were a womens guild who had booked the hall to have a social morning. Their ages must have ranged from 30 upwards. I was wearing my kilt by the way. I thought quick and said confidently ‘good morning ladies’ to the one’s that were in my near vicinity and they simply replied good morning back. I then said I would come back later to do my printing but they would'nt have any of that and told me to carry on. So I went to the printing machine and started my copying which took in all about 25 mins. I had conversations with several of them as I was plodding away about all sorts of things, but never once did my kilt get a mention. No one was at all interested in it. They even brought me a cuppa. It made me think of what my neighbour said quite a while ago now, I know I mentioned it here before but here it is again. When we were speaking at the time I told her I was very reluctant to wear my kilt around my local area. I don’t see why not she said .. It’s only a kilt. As I left the hall a few of the women were leaving and heading the same way as me so some more conversations started up until we all said goodbye. Again no one battered an eye that I was in my kilt. All in all it was an interesting morning and a further confidence booster.

Come on Derek, you were really just a little dissappointed that they 'ignored' your kilt!
They probably all wanted to say how cool the kilt looked, but were too reserved to actually say so!

Well done anyway, that was a brave act!

Hi Graham .... seriously though, I much prefer it when no one mentions my kilt. I treat my kilt as simply a part of me ... and since no one ever comments on my jeans I'm pleased when no one comments on my kilt .. I'm not brill at explaining things like this but I'm sure you know what I mean. By the way Graham .. have you made futher advances about your trip to the UK. Kew Gardens still sounds a good outing.

Yes Derek, I'm the same as you, I don't crave attention, sure it's nice sometimes, but I like to be invisable in the crowd. Sadly, that's pretty hard to do in a kilt.

Re. London, we plan still to be in London for three days from July 31st.
Unfortunatly that time doesn't suit Hamish because of his trip to Canada, but if you are in London I know that my wife very much wants to visit Kew and we can be there.
Of course, it won't be the same with Hamish, be we can still have fun if you want to meet.

Our trip is now pretty solid, well, we've paid for the fares.
I wish we could have arranged London a bit earlier, but frankly, touring Scotland is our main priority. Juggling all the things we want to do has been quite tricky.

If we can get together, it would be great. you can email me if you like on camriversigns@yahoo.com.au if you like.

    Derek,

That is such great news to here! Just being yourself and no one cares about what you wear.

It honestly took me about 5 min. of embarasment while walking by my self around campus. After that I was fine with wearing my kilt any time and any place. I'm really upset that I don't have more kilts so that I can switch from pants totally. That fact scares my friends mor than me actually wearing it.

Same here Enzayer. I'm hoping to get at least one, maybe two more from Stillwater in the next month or two, and maybe go from there.

Hope to actually make one sooner, we'll see how that turns out :P
