I'd have to agree with everyone's opinion of Hector Russell. The folks in Edinburgh were very helpful and were delighted to help us find anything they could with Menzies or MacQuarrie tartans for gifts back home. The woman that helped us talked to us at length about Utilikilts and was as friendly as you could wish for.

I ended up buying my first tartan kilt from HR in Glasgow, but I definately chose HR because of my service in Edinburgh. The tourist shops on the mile were terrible, and I feel very lucky that I didn't waste my money at any of those.

Also, for those traveling to Edinburgh, there were a couple vegitarian resturants that were quite nice. One was accross the street from the Travel lodge and the other was basically a couple right turns from there. Small resturants, great food. Traveling with a vegan (my wife, not me) can make nice, romantic dinners tough, but I was blown away. Vegan Haggis, while not quite the same thing, can be prepared quite finely.

The best resteraunt in Edinburgh is "Garfunkels" on the royal mile just past the museum of childhood -Battered Haggis in Drambuie sauce -better than a fried mars bar!!
most of those shops just sell tartanarama -but there is one or two decent shops ! anyway forget the shops and hit the castle instead !

Don't forget the Jekyll and Hyde pub. The food may not be great, but watching the tourists try and find the door to the main floor washrooms, while enjoying a pint of McEwan's 70 is priceless.

Slightly off topic, but you can also get exceptional service from Hector Russel here in the states. If you are visiting San Francisco stop in at their Union Square shop. The gentlemen here are very courtious and attentive.

Good to know, thanks, I was wondering about where I'd get a good veggie meal there, and we will compare the veggie haggis with my wifes' recipe
