I don't think we should judge people in the present based on what happened in the past, either.......

Exactly. Should we recognise wrongs? You bet. But a historian should at least attempt to be objective and non-biased when writing history, although the realist in me knows that the very nature of humanity is not perfect.

If we judge each individual person on the basis of what their ancestors and relatives did, then I'm in serious trouble. You all REALLY don't want to be associating with me.

My family wandered from Scotland/Ireland to Illinois on one side, and from Ireland/Scotland/Germany to Tennessee then Missouri then to Illinois on the other....
Amongst the Confederates, outlaws and what-not in my ancestry, I sure hope that I am not just the product of my ancestors.......
And Todd, I agree 100%......

Good lord, is MY past checkered. Politicians, even Alexander Hamilton and Horace Greeley in there along with lots of rebels, horse thieves and highwaymen. If I was judged by the past and my ancestors I'd have been hung long ago. For that matter, some people think I should be hung anyway.
