Welcome.
Yep, sure am!
I married into a Cajun family, jjoseph! My wife's family are Cajuns (and a few Nawleans Spanish & French, as well as some Florida Parish Anglos), Melancons to be specific!
They tell me I'm Cajun "by the ring & the backdoor"!
You know there is a Louisiana state tartan as well:
http://www.csbr.org/latartan1.htm
Suitable for any Cajuns -- and my wife wears the the Nova Scotia tartan, since her Melancons came from there in Le Grand Derangement in 1755...
Cheers,
Todd

WELCOME!
So where did you go to school, Glen? As for Dyess AFB, I have a kid brother who's an Lt. and navigator there and a best bud who's a Tech Sgt., but I'm civ. I have a HUGE respect for our military as I've seen up close what they give of themselves for our country and how they entrust themselves to us our elected officials to use that contribution wisely...(off topic comments deleted, LOL) I've been the go to guy for some guys while they are TDY and do what I can to keep their life here (bills, dogs, apt., etc. alive and kicking while they do their job elsewhere).

Abilene is middle of somewhere, Davedove. San Antonio's about a 4.5 hr drive due south. El Paso is 6hrs west, Midland / Odessa is 3 hrs west. Lubbock is 3 hrs NW. Dallas is 3 hrs E. Texarkana is 6 hrs E. Austin is 4 hrs SE. Houston is 6.5 hrs SE. Brownsville and the valley are 9 hrs south.... if ya abide by the speed laws anyways. You get the point. All that to say, if it ain't local, it's a DRIVE.

Re. the fam., yeah, it's a fun mix. I always thought the difference between the Brits and the French was the Brits sired the kids but left them w/ the natives, whereas the French married 'em or went native themselves. The East Texas mélange is quite the French/Indian/African melting pot.... then add the Southern royalty (Celtic diaspora) as they migrated west and you get quite a peculiar genre of Celt indeed !!

Still have family around here, Mark? Anyone I might know?
And an actual kilt question: is there a proper height at which to wear the sporran?
Thanks again, for the welcome everyone! I'll be passing the site addy on to some mates of mine.

You're right about that. Since I've already been to San Antonio, I was looking at the to see if there was anything close and THERE AIN'T NOTHING CLOSE!

I guideline I've always heard is to hold your hands together in front while you're standing. That's about where the sporran should go.

Welcome to the forum!
As for the sporran, a lot people wear it too low and that isn't good. It makes walking a bit of a problem. I have heard different ways of figuring out the right place to put it, but the most important thing is that it's comfortable.

Scotty (JJoseph) and Mark,
I did a joint program between ACU & HSU in the early 70's but spent most of my time at McMurry (go figure) before transferring up to Lubbock and Texas Tech to finish a degree in architecture. Did spend a lot of time at the truckstop at Tye, but have not been back in that area since '82.
Again welcome to the board and as you can tell we are a very active bunch!

joseph,
from the Bluegrass .... a hearty welcome. the depth of kilters know no bounds.
i visited the Worlds HemisFair in '68 along with San Antonio and the Alamo. damn, that was a long time ago. may not be exactly West-By-God Texas, but Texas none-the-less! And if it's Texas, it must be good.

A hearty welcome to you.
I spent about 8 years at Ft. Hood and then some in Brady. I still have an EX down there. (not all my Ex's,are in Texas, just one)
note; did anyone else notice that the Bluebonnet Tartan looks very close to the X Marks Tartan no. 3?
