I'm no psychologist, but at a guess, I'm sure the 'skirt' comments can really be translated as:-

"I wish I had the style / courage / self belief to wear a kilt too. However I don't have, so I'll try to put down anyone else who has. After all if I can't do it, why should he ?

Oh, and I'm a bit of a saddo as well, so I'll only comment if my buddies can hear it so we can all be pathetic together....."

Twenty years ago, these types would probably have been making similar distancing 'macho' style comments about deodorant or having a shower more than once a month...

If only their self confidence matched the size of their mouths....

No matter what people say negatively about your kilt there are more people with a postive comment especially with a supportive group like X Marks the Scot whenever your feelin down about what folks may have said come by drop a line and guarenteed you'll feel better, and about the ladies they love a man in a kilt to them it's like being forbidden fruit.
