Well, unfortunatly, it really needs to be taken in about 4 inches, although I could get away with 2 inches. What I just thought about was laying out the kilt on the table and seeing what it would look like to add an extra pleat on each end of the pleated section. A seamstress may be able to do this without taking the pleated section completely apart. The waist liner would have to be taken out but that is hardly a big deal since that is not seen anyway.

By the way...if I haven't said it already...thanks to all for your thoughts. :P

Well, thanks for all the help...I've made up my mind. I'm going to go ahead and sell the one I have and purchase a new kilt. If I take a chance and have the kilt altered and it still doesn't fit right or the end result just doesn't look good I will have wasted a good bit of money. So, the prudent thing to do is sell this one and get a new one.

Again...thanks to all for your help

I just discovered this morning, that Stillwater kilts has a set of instructions on how to resize a kilt on their website, They are in Adobe format, and are quite easy to understand.

Excellent...I will look at them and bring them to a seamstress to see what can be done, thanks!

Unless you specifically request it, most kiltmakers will make a kilt smaller simply by making the apron and underapron smaller, rather than taking out pleats (which is a much bigger job, because it involves remaking the buttonhole and taking out more of the lining and canvas). So, if you really want to have someone remove pleats as well as making the apron and underapron smaller, you'll need to specify that, and it will cost. It may be that, at the cost of the alteration, a new kilt would be more desirable.

There are also instructions in my book for how to alter a kilt, if you're interested.

    Cheers!

    Barb
