Found this while trawling the web. Wonder if anyone can confirm its accuracy, or even just the idea:

I've seen other maps like this. I can't say much for their accuracy, other than the MacLachlans are right about where I've seen them on the others.

There are many versions of this type of map, but remember it is more of a "general" guide and does not take into consideration that people tend to move due to many factors, and that the whole concept of a clan is very "fluid" in general.

To add to what Todd pointed out, the validity of such a map may have been quite accurate at the time it was created, but that would be a simple snap-shot of time.

At one point, the Lamonts controlled nearly all of the Cowal peninsula and today there are no Lamont holdings left in all of Scotland. So is the map accurate? Not by today's standards, it is not.

Both maps show the Macdonalds on the Trotternish Peninsula of Skye which is where my family came from...up in Staffin, Uig before that.

For a general overview of "clan lands", these type of maps are all right -- my point was that one cannot take this for "face value" when doing genealogical research, since folks tend to move when things get tough.

I can attest taht the Menzies area (along Loch Tay in Perthshire) looks correct on both maps. The Castle is still there just outside of Weem.

That being said, I loved looking over the map. Old maps and charts have always sent my imagination aflame.

And names tend to change to protect the "innocent", too.
