I would like to add... If we are wearing kilts to celebrate our culture, than let us be real men and celebrate all of it. Do not fear. Do not fall for the idea that it might look silly or out of place. If you tread down that path, you would most likely not be wearing your kilt much either. We should be proud of ALL elements of our culture, and none of it should be labeled as costume, lest we hamstring our selves. Wearing a great kilt is just as much, if not more, of a statement as wearing the little kilt... While little kilts can almost pass themselves off as normal, it is because some very brave people drug it kicking and screaming out of the costume garmet bin, and made it what it is, an acceptable alternative of modern clothing. We do a disservice to the great kilt to liberate it's smaller kin, but leave it behind. If more men would wear them, bravely, boldly, out in public and to all manner of social function, they would not seem so out of place. The idea of wearing a great kilt as a day to day garmet is no sillier or outlandish than it is to wear the little kilt.

That is all. I have said all this before. I want very badly to be able to afford a nice great kilt. I would gladly champion it's wear and all the stares, questions, comments, and jeers that would come with it. I have been been challenged here before for my views, and while done in a "polite" manner, I remember some of the biting remarks made about my opinions. I am willing to risk those again by saying all of this.

A great kilt is NOT better served being cut in half to make two little kilts.

I have a slight fear that if I wore one, with my appearance, that people would indeed mistake me for being in costume or period piece. Either that, or people would sound the alarms that a lone berserker has come to sack the village. Bah... I would still wear one.
Only one way to find out.

I don't think you ever answered me last time... are you in NC or SC? I think if the two of us were seen at the same time walking down the street in the great kilt, they'd call in SWAT.

Well I've been wearing the little kilt almost daily now for about 8 months. The only time I get more negative reactions than positive is when I wear the MARPAT camo kilt (which is a shame, because it's actually quite a nice kilt). I still wear it anyway. I think the few negative reactions I get are from people who don't recognize it as a kilt but see it as just a schoolgirl type skirt. I've actually had people say this to me before.

I think the great kilt is actually more easily recognized for what it is. This is just conjecture on my part, but I bet the great kilt would be more easily recognized as national dress than the little kilt, even though most of the kilts being worn casually today are by far little kilts.

I've got a bit of $$$ saved up for a camera right now but I'm thinking really hard about picking up 7 or 8 yards of tartan at this point. Obviously I am going to need to get an appropriate belt & broach for it, and possibly another sporran (something about a modern casual sporran on a great kilt... the mental picture doesn't look right to me...)

    South Carolina.

A long time ago, when this very subject was brought up, conversation got heated enough to have the thread deleted. This topic has been rehashed a few times, with some good results and some very bad results.

I hope this time people on both sides of the issue can converse on this issue with no shots fired.

And no Magnus, if both of us were to go about wearing great kilts, SWAT would not be summoned... I do believe the National Guard would be summoned. I believe this is the typical response to "Foreign Invasion."

I do believe in my own somewhat educated and personal opinion that a Freelander Sporran would be the proper sporran of choice whilst wearing a great kilt.

It would be both rugged and handsome.

Well let's see if we can make it more positive & productive this time. Feel free to PM me with more details about what went wrong. I think I missed the mayhem last time.

Ha. They'd probably cart us off to Gitmo.

    Great minds think alike.

I was thinking it, but hadn't said anything yet as I wanted to consider it a bit longer. :-D

I keep wanting to get a Freelander sporran and the last couple of times this happened I ended up getting another kilt instead.

Perhaps adding a great kilt to the wardrobe will force my hand in the name of good taste.

In the deleted thread... It boiled down to that the little kilt was socially acceptable in this modern age... And the great kilt was not. And that the great kilt is best when cut in half and made into two little kilts. I see the hatchet handle, and I don't want to dig it out.

There are however, some great kilt supporters. We lurk.

I don't want to rekindle the flames except to say that there is as much place for the great kilt as there is the little kilt in this modern age.
