What tartans make the best kilts?

Big blocks of color, smaller blocks? Does it matter?I saw Cameron black & red today and really like the swatch, but will it make an appealing kilt?
I am so so on the USMC from the front, but really like the way it looks pleated.
Where does one research something like this?
Or, how do I get a sneak preview of how a tartan will lok as a kilt?
 Thanks
 David

I guess it depends on whether the kilt is pleated to the sett or the stripe.
Take your marine tartan, for example. You don't like the front, which shows the sett, but you like the back, which is pleated to stripe (most military tartans are). If the back were pleated to sett, as most civilian tartans are, you might not like that, either.

Do some googling of tartans that interest you. I bet you can find some kilt examples.

This is a similar thread specific to pleated to strip tartans. Maybe it's a good place to start from.
