A sporran can be both decorative and functional. It can also be uncomfortable and clunky at times. I agree with Hamish when deciding whether or not to wear one. I think as one becomes increasingly experienced and builds confidence wearing a kilt in public, concerns about wearing a kilt without a sporran will pass. The sporran was not invented to be some sort of icon. A sporran is not going to make a kilt something it is not. A kilt is a kilt. Period. Seriously concerned about it being a type of skirt?... better stick to pants!
