I think that's something we forget a lot. Many of us own hand-sewn traditionals, so we get picky.
Would most folks we run into have any clue about the difference? Probably not.

I don't think you would have any problems at all in wearing a Stillwater to semi-formal events. You would probably get away with it at formal events, but if you're going to the trouble to be formal, I would go ahead and get the tank.
