Was wondering about all of the above myself. Just out of curiosity I asked the seller the following question:

" Sir, Do you have the provenance (documented history) for this material and Kilt? Perhaps pictures or documentation mentioning the material, or perhaps a receipt from the Kilt maker? "

Will let you know if I receive a reply.

While I am extremely skeptical that a kiltmaker would see tartan cloth that is 150+ years old and agree to cut it, alter it, and make clothing from it, rather than suggest to the man that he have it preserved in a museum somewhere, I have to say that the story is possible. I'm sure that he could find a kilt maker somewhere who would do it.

But one easy way to verify the story. He said his kilt created quite a stir at the MacGregor clan tent at Grandfather Mountain. Just contact the MacGregor clan society, ask who was manning their tent at Grandfather, and then find out from them if anyone came by with a kilt made from 150+ year old MacGregor tartan.

That would definitely be something they would remember!

By the way, I did buy a kilt on ebay one time in the MacGregor tartan that was maybe 75-100 years old. Paid all of $75 for it. :-) So there are deals to be had.

" I am in the process of uploading the pictures as we speak. As for the documentation, it does not exist, the deal being made between the kiltmaker and myself, on the side, off the books to avoid himself having to pay the British taxes.(HA!) Please check out the photos, they will be made available immediately. I am also going to have the kilt and fly plaid dry cleaned by a reputable person tomorrow, so it will be pressed and ready. Let me know what you think. This material being in the family for generations, I think everyone else thought it to be a throw or blanket for all those years... I HAD recognized it as 8 yards of genuine kilt material, with selvedged edge. Thank you for your interest. "

I'd like to know why there isnt a pic of the kilt on a person, a mannequin, or at least a full pic of it laid out on a table. Each pic seems to be angled to conceal most of the kilt.

Actually, we have a peice of MacGregor cloth here in the museum that is about 150 years old, and the colors are brighter than you might think. That's why I said I couldn't confirm or deny the age of the cloth based on those pictures -- the quality just isn't good enough to make the fine distinctions.

Also, I might add that analine dyes were introcduced in 1856 in Scotland, so the cloth could be 150 years old and analine dyed.
    Aye,
    Matt
