Jonesing?

I appreciate that I'm only a poor Brit living in the backwaters of London--but what does 'Jonesing' Mean?

I'm not sure where the term came from, but the people on this board use it to describe the feeling of not being able to wait for something but knowing you have to - unfulfilled anticipation.

It may have morphed from the phrase "keeping up with the Jones' (or "Joneses"... whichever way you say it) meaning to get something because someone else has it. "bob bought his big screen TV to keep up with the Joneses".

Shortening the phrase to "jonsing", it means to crave something... "the junking was jonesing for his next fix". "The man was jonesing for a cigarette".

As I understand it, it is a carry over from the heroin culture. A junkie that was going into withdrawal was "jonesing" for a fix. Fast forward 25 years or so and now all us kilt-a-holics jones for our next kilt.

There was also a popular song, "Basketball Jones" which satirized another popular song, "Love Jones".

A jones is a craving, like that of an addict for his drug.

I've never heard it related to "Keeping up with the Jones'", which, I suppose can also be addictive.
