Toddler Kilts?

I have a one year old son who's just learning to walk. Of course, he's still in diapers, too. All in all, he's not happy about pants in general. (And hasn't worn shoes for more than a few hours since he was born, little goof) He's pretty happy in a diaper and t-shirt, but that's got no style or panache.

I'm wondering if it would cute, silly, or pointless to make him a little neo kilt- I have a bit of fabric leftover that I estimate would be just enough for one his size. He goes to a lot of festivals and stuff with us, if you saw a kid that little in a kilt would it be cool or oh-so-precious?

Go for it. Don't let him go regimental, though, or you'll have a mess.

I dunno why you are not making it yet...My kids (when I have them) are gonna have a kilt as soon as they start walking.

Well, I have to measure him and the little guy's asleep is the obvious answer, but also- his main method of transportation is crawling right now, and so I would have to make the kilt fall above the top of his kneecaps while his legs are bent- something that might make it look too short.

Wait until he is walking. We put my son in his first kilt after he had been walking for about 6 months. He wore that until about a month ago. Originally we bought a bigger size (I have yet to find any kid's clothes that fit the size on the label) and was lucky enough that it fit him well until recently. IHe is 4 now and will need a new kilt as he has sprouted recently.

Little kilts take me about 30 minutes to make, and they're good enough for the little time that he'll be in them. As he grows, and requires more material, it's STILL not a huge investment to get him used to the kilts.

Not until he hits about a 28 inch waist will you really need to invest anything

Jimmy, at one of our local celtic festivals in Va (either Leesburg or Williamsburg) my wife and I saw the cutest little boy in a kilt (still in diapers). He spent most of the time trying to dance in front of the stages with the other kids. Everytime he toddled out there with the others, the whole audience applauded him. He had a great time, and his parents probably had no difficulty getting him to sleep that night. Who knows, another 15 years or so and he might be the 10,000 XMARKS member. Oh yes, he was wearing what looked like a Stewart tartaned kilt.

Jerry, isn't that just the GREATEST site in the world?! Everytime I see a little guy in a kilt, I just beam! There IS some hope for the future.

The largest St. Patrick's Day Parade is in Savannah, and the kids in that parade all wear kilts that we made... little Philabegs. I have a LOAD of pictures and "thank you" notes from the kids and parents to show the "power of the kilt".

Thanks to Mychael, my littlest wears a couple PittsburghKilts camos. Okay, those and about ten others that I made too.

The wee tots in kilts are truely a sight to see. My wife and justy got married in April and her nephews Patrick 2 1/2 and Peter 1 1/2 both wore kilts and stole the show. I say go for it...it's never to early to start wearing a kilt.

If I could figure out how to post a blasted picture on this site I a have a couple great shots of the tikes decked out in their kilts and prince charlie's.

Basically you get the URL of the picture, (rightclicking on the pic, selecting Properties, then copying the thing that starts with HTTP) and paste it into your message here.

Then you either type [IMG] on one side of the url and [/IMG] on the other with no spaces.

Or you highlight the entire picture's URL, go up to the little formatting menu above each post that shows up while you're writing, and hit the little box with yellow sky and mountains- that will automatically add in the tags.
