I found an accidental compromise.

Wear loose boxer shorts but let the boys out of the fly.

The boys are free.

Any wind gust is likely to attract attention to the boxers...

Course, the compromise is only when necessary...regimental the rest of the time.

Visions of little garter like elastic tartan cloths to slip over each thigh so at initial lift off they show as boxers....
