Seriously? What aisle in home depot? Not the number obviously... but with what other stuff? I thought I knew that store like the back of my hand.

The one by me has them by the power tools and key cutter. If you bring the kilt (or wear it) to HD and show the snaps to any of their employees, they SHOULD be able to help. Not all home depot employees are that swift, but even an idiot should know what the snaps are.

LD... I answered this in ToadInAKilt's "Making a Kilt" thread in the General section... but...

If you want to throw me your zip code, I can go on the computer and see if a local store has them in your region. If you're in the Mid-Atlantic area, you're probably in good shape. Other regions carry different stock due to inventory issues. The majority of HD's don't carry them... just like some have leather supplies (out west) and others don't.

The SKU numbers are universal throughout The Home Depot, both in the US and Canada... so it's a snap to look-up a "remote SKU source" with your zip code. I can also call your local store to see if it's actually on-hand, and where it's located in the store. It don't cost nothing if I'm on the HD system!

    Response to your PM:

Eventhough you're about 60 miles south of me, Baltimore is in the "Southern Region" for the company. I'm due to head-in at 2:00, so I'll give it a check and respond around the dinner break this evening.

    Keep your fingers crossed!

As I thought, your stores dropped them some time ago. You're not blind!

Ours has only a few left, and they too are yellow-tagged to be phased-out and not reordered. Right now, there are no preferred vendors to take over the line.

The store in York does have them, but they're on the way out. The brass ones are probably already gone, and the chrome are coming-up with small numbers. Since you're heading up for dry wall anyway... grab what you can in the Tool Corral right by the leather punches and grommets.

Other than that, the store in Washington, PA has a LOAD. That doesn't help much, but it's fun to see where they're at in the US. It's also nice to see that the Home Depots in the midwest are beginning to take-on leather supplies. Someone out there may want to look into sporran belts (hint, hint).

Did you say Baltimore? There's a Tandy Leather in Essex, I think the snaps you're looking for are used to make holsters. I'm sure if they don't stock them they will order them for you.

Hrm, just brass and chrome? Thats the problem I had in the first place... only brass and nickel. I want something more decorateive... my AK has antiqued copper looking snaps, and even the ones on my black UK are not just plain chrome, they are more... brushed steel...

I'll check the tool corral tomorrow and if they are yellow tagged I'll buy all they have, chrome snaps will come in handy eventually.

    Thanks for the info!

    Think Outside the Box

If the shiny polished brass and chrome snaps are not to your liking then
you could perhaps paint them the color you want -or- glue fabric to the
outside/exposed cover of the snaps to achieve what you want. Another
thought - go snapless and just use velcro to secure the item together
from its inside. Just some ideas workable or not.

    Try www.prymdritz.com

I count 13 colors and patterns of heavy duty snaps.

22 colors of fashion snaps (probably too small for a kilt)

This is where I got snaps when I was first trying to make kilts.

They will locate a retailer near you. If that retailer is out of stock or does not regularly order what you want, they can order direct from Prym-dritz at no extra cost.

My rural WalMart, a small one, has UK sized snaps in the fabric dept along with the installation gear. They carry a variety of sizes so should have the AK size too. Shop at WalMart, support the Chinese economy...

I got a snap setting kit from Tandy Leather on line and I'm 300 miles from their nearest store.

Amazing what one accumulates wearing kilts....
