The blunt bottom of a kilt ending midknee and blunt tops of midlength or taller boots create the illusion of shorter, thicker legs. For guys with thicker builds, above/top of the knee kilts and short boots or sandals works to create balance in the same way.
(is what I get for havin' an artist for a mum)
Perfectly stated, Scotty. The 'visual' is all down to body proportions - I have often referred to that when being asked for kilt-accessory advice - but not everyone can see it. Wearing the wrong accessory with a kilt can very easily make the wearer appear to be deformed in some way - I have seen it many times. Overlong jackets are one of the worst offenders!
