It has struck me, on a couple of occasions, that some have criticized others' attire by saying "pipe bands wear white socks" or "pipe bands wear tartan ties."

Well, who wears kilts more than pipe bands?

Yes, Bob, but pipe bands wear Uniforms - the rest of us, hopefully, do not! Much as I admire pipers and pipe bands, I certainly do not wish to copy their uniforms - especially when going about my daily business.

If I wear white socks they turn yellow for some reason after a few hours. Yucky. Noticeably yellow. Buttery.

I'm getting the impression that, once you've been out walking for a few hours, everybody around you turns yellow....and buttery.
