    Unhappy Bad news

Bad news! Today I was told I am not allowed to wear my kilt to work any more!

When we recieved our Certificate of Quality Management last month a member of our board sat next to me. HE felt uncomfortable sitting next to "a man in a skirt"! He brought it up at the next board meeting. There it was decided that I schould not wear my kilt when working!

He has problems, I have to wear trousers! ****!!!

As I learned here recently, words and what they mean to people matter a lot.

The strict dictionary definition of a word isn't nearly as important as its social meaning and context.

    Skirts are women's clothing.

    Kilts are not skirts.

Down with skirts! Up with kilts!

Germany, interestingly, has a different view on Human Rights legislation. They seem to have a more flexible and open view. If you are in a safe position, and feel like challenging the company's ruling, check it out.

Hermann that really stinks. I don't know you situation, but one guy feels uncomfortable (prob. because of his own ignorance and narrow view) and YOU have to change what you wear?

    If this guy the boss?

Seems unfair to me. Do you want me to come over and sort him out for you?

Yes, he´s the boss´s boss, no way past him. And I have to add that this is a Christian House(TM) founded by brethren.
And with wife and three children I will not risk anything for what is after all a clothing issue.
I will go to our works council, but as we belong to a churches welfare council our rights as workers are even less than usual. So I do not think anything can be done other than wear a "trousers stink" T-shirt.
It is just that I´ve been wearing my kilt to work for ca. 1/2 year without anybody protesting and now I have to change back! That sucks!!

Question The path of self righteousness....

It's a great pity that some of those who attach (or become attached at birth) to a particular belief system, use it to justify whatever man made-absurdities fit in with their own way of non-thinking.

"I will go to our works council, but as we belong to a churches welfare council our rights as workers are even less than usual."

How very Christian of them. If Jesus Christ (forgive me if I've got their God wrong - I know nothing of their way of life) arrived for a visit tomorrow, would he have to show up in a a nice buisness suit or perhaps a pair of 501's - and have a haircut?

    Have I missed something?

    You have my sympathy Herman.

Good luck with any appeal, and better luck finding a better job with more intelligent management.

As for slogan tee-shirts, let me suggest, "Real Men wear Kilts, and the boss makes me wear these sissy pants!"

Hermann, I wonder if you have read my article here on this site about Christians and kilts? http://www.xmarksthescot.com/articles_id.php?id=1
    there may be something helpful.

Christians are just as human as everyone else and can be influenced by cultural conditioning, bias, misinformation etc.

If you can show them that a kilt is a male garment, not female, that Jesus didn't wear trousers etc. you may get somewhere.

I've been in a great variety of church situations kilted, and most of the time found acceptance, no obvious problems.

The "brethren" are very fundamental (a dirty word these days, but i mean it in a positive way), if you know anything of the Bible, you could discuss it on that level.
The Bible is most definately not against the wearing of kilts!!

Let me know if i can help, this concerns me a bit.

That's just not right! Because of one man's narrow views, you and anyone else who wants to go kilted has to suffer. He obviously needs to be educated. Listen to Graham, as I'm sure he knows much more about the subject than I do.

The biggest problem is people that make it to being on a board of directors aren't usually too open to being educated. They tend to feel since they're so successful they know it all. I've had run-ins with upper management types in my time and several times I've simply quit and walked out. Now, as a bit of revenge in THIS situation, perhaps tartan trews would be the ticket. Bet that would scare him more than the kilt. ;)
