Moving slightly away from the tights--kilt aspect; more to concept of being 'sissy'.
It is some years since I was active in the military, and no doubt kit has evolved since then: but it was quite normal for rugged winter warfare instructors to advise soldiers to wear tights under their uniform.
To another point, someone appeared to suggest in an earlier post that 'trews' could be worn with the kilt!
Trews being long trousers as worn by the HLI and often officers in highland regiments, in place of the kilt, could some confusion have crept in?
