I don't think I've written "Shannon" on a paper in years except for my driver's license. There are ways to get around an unfortunate name, especially if your parents gave you a cool middle name or the full form of the first. (You can do something with Alexander no matter how formal or casual you want to be, but if your folks name you Zander, you've got no backup that looks good on your law degree.)
*Yes, I know five Shannons (and one Siannon), and even dated one once. There's a lot of American Irish around here, it's a popular name. There was actually another Shannon with the same surname as me in high school- I've done a serious study of how to use nicknames and how far that can be pushed.
My bad peepers can not see that blasted gray text.
Actually, Dreadbelly has long been a nickname of mine... It has followed me through much of my teenage years right in to adulthood. I'll let people figure it out on their own to figure out why I am called that.
I have gone by my middle name. Infact, once I started putting that on job applications, I started getting hired.

Take a pint of Guinness and watch that waterfall.
Drink it halfway down and stop... you dare not drink it all.
Take half a shot of whiskey... make Jameson the call,
Then top the shot with Bailey's and get ready for a ball.
Line those glasses up, me boys, it's time to face the fray.
If you ain't got the gonads... get up and walk away.
Drop that shot right in the beer, then quickly drink it down.
Last one empty on the bar will buy another round.
Oh, vodka's in the bottle and rum is in the flask.
I've got a shot of brandy and tequila's in me glass.
Imported wines from off the vines will sometimes serve the task,
but whiskey, Bailey's, Guinness... will knock me on my a$$.

The trick with this issue is that it's tough to avoid a "girly" name if you don't know what's coming up in popular culture. Example: My name is James, but my parents called me Jamie because they don't care for "Jim" (no offense meant, all you Jims out there).
And then, of course, when I was in second grade, the TV show The Bionic Woman came out. Damnit, I was referred to as Jaime Sommers for three freaking years. I hated that show.
Luckily, later on the movie The Untouchables came out, and Sean Connery's name in that was Jamie Malone. So I had a Sean Connery character on my side after that.

Name one character with my name that fits that bill.

Personally never heard the name Shandy before, but I have known Sandy's as guys. If Dreadbelly ever stops working as a nickname try Shade (I actually had a great great grandfather Shadrach and people called him Shade - parents are trying to get me to name the one on the way after him).

As soon as there is a cure for whatever is wrong with my gut, I am sure people will stop calling me Dreadbelly.
I did go by Andy for a while. And I hated it. Tried Shawn. And Sean. And didn't much care for it. I had a friend that called me Dee. And Shaw by a teacher that couldn't keep a straight face when calling me by my real name. Yes, there was Sandy for a while, till people started calling me Sandy Duncan, and I had to start handing out the beat downs.

This is one fun thread!
I didn't like all of my names seperately, but put together (first, middle, and last). I came up with one that I can live with:
Confident in yourself with a strong mind and creative flair you have the ability to apply your ideas to practical purposes. Your wisdom and balance means that others seek you for counsel and guidance. You set high objectives for youself based on your idealism and then achieve them with boundless energy and determination. You are loved for your understanding and positive attitude to life.
I must confess, I thought it was because I like everyone here (he says with that funny grin he is known for)

Common mis-translation, I had to live with it for years. Actual translation is the question that Michael was famed for asking "Who is like God?" Somewhere along the line the question mark got lost.
