FWIW- You could (like I do) use a nickname/variant on all non-totally-official paperwork. An old friend of mine goes by Shane and his first name is Shannon*, unless it's something like applying for a copy of his birth certificate, he 's fine. I don't think I've written "Shannon" on a paper in years except for my driver's license. There are ways to get around an unfortunate name, especially if your parents gave you a cool middle name or the full form of the first. (You can do something with Alexander no matter how formal or casual you want to be, but if your folks name you Zander, you've got no backup that looks good on your law degree.)

*Yes, I know five Shannons (and one Siannon), and even dated one once. There's a lot of American Irish around here, it's a popular name. There was actually another Shannon with the same surname as me in high school- I've done a serious study of how to use nicknames and how far that can be pushed.

Actually, Dreadbelly has long been a nickname of mine... It has followed me through much of my teenage years right in to adulthood. I'll let people figure it out on their own to figure out why I am called that.

I have gone by my middle name. Infact, once I started putting that on job applications, I started getting hired.

It's interesting that people have different drinks with the same name. I've been to bars that say a carbomb is just a boilermaker with Harp and Jamisons. I also used to frequent a bar in Louisville, KY that called a carbomb a balck and tan made with Guinness and a hard cider - also called a snakebite by some (had this confirmed in Solsbury England when I ordered it as Guinness and Cider at a pub and was told they didn't serve car bombs there).

Luckily, later on the movie The Untouchables came out, and Sean Connery's name in that was Jamie Malone. So I had a Sean Connery character on my side after that.

Personally never heard the name Shandy before, but I have known Sandy's as guys. If Dreadbelly ever stops working as a nickname try Shade (I actually had a great great grandfather Shadrach and people called him Shade - parents are trying to get me to name the one on the way after him).

As soon as there is a cure for whatever is wrong with my gut, I am sure people will stop calling me Dreadbelly.

I did go by Andy for a while. And I hated it. Tried Shawn. And Sean. And didn't much care for it. I had a friend that called me Dee. And Shaw by a teacher that couldn't keep a straight face when calling me by my real name. Yes, there was Sandy for a while, till people started calling me Sandy Duncan, and I had to start handing out the beat downs.

I didn't like all of my names seperately, but put together (first, middle, and last). I came up with one that I can live with:

Common mis-translation, I had to live with it for years. Actual translation is the question that Michael was famed for asking "Who is like God?" Somewhere along the line the question mark got lost.
