    Joe,

A black Argyle jacket with silver buttons would probably be too dressy for day wear. I intend to get a black Argyle and replace the silver buttons with black buttons to make it more versatile.

OK if the jacket is altered... Off the peg, jackets made to be worn with trousers are far too long to be worn with a kilt.

...and the wrong taper, better to buy an Argyll and rent the PC when necessary.

I've been misunderstood! Or moreso, I wasn't being clear. This thread is about whether a certain type of material or certain types of buttons (for example) would be appropriate for certain settings (day, night, formal, informal...). My comment was that if you felt comfortable wearing a tweed jacket and pants to some occasion, then the same tweed, the same buttons et cetera would be fine with a kilt. I did not intend to say the "actual same jacket" would be fine with the kilt. Certainly not. I hope I am now being more clear.

It is my goal in life to be clear. Often clearly wrong, but clear nonetheless.

I also felt the black Argyle jacket with the silver buttons might be too dressy for many daytime occasions. After reading the opinions on this thread, I am thinking the grey tweed or the navy blue Argyle jacket with the silver buttons may be a good all around option. My kilt has a lot of navy blue in it, the navy blue might be the best choice for me.

Does anyone have a navy blue argyle or seen one worn?

this might be helpful, just got the Geoffrey(tailor), 21Centurykilts, brochure/catalogue which has the full size glossy colour pictures. It is arranged to show the different outfits plus when they would be appropriate: in this case "predominantly worn for formal daytime functions...with plain leather day sporran, coloured hose and a shirt and tie."
I ordered it about a little over a week ago from their website.

    Black John Brown Jacket

I brought one of these the oher day - it has black horn buttons and is capable of being used for day wear and evening - it is also very trenday if worn say with a Black Douglas kilt. see http://www.thekiltstore.com/products.asp?recnumber=555
