well my vote is for special occasions only. My view is that they tend to formalise the kilt, mind you, they look good!
I wear hidden elastic to keep the hose up, flashes i wear for evenings out.
Something i saw in Scotland, an older man walking along wearing shorts, kilt hose and flashes!!!!
I walked past him (he saw me alright!) wearing a kilt, hose but NO flashes.
It was a weird experience.

I use flashes very time I wear my hose pulled up.
Thats only usually when I dress for church or a cally night . Other than that it's usually hose pushed down I prefer

If I'm wearing hose over my calf, I wear flashes. I always feel a bit naked when I wear shorter socks with no flashes or sqian dubh.

Flashes with kilt hose and trad. kilts. UK's, I don't bother with the flashes, if I can get by without'em.

I actually LIKE the looks of flashes, as long as they're the right color. Reds with reds... blues with blues... etc. Wearing them everytime is just a simple part of the "outfit" for some. I, personally, find them uncomfortable at times so I prefer to wear kilt hose that stay-up on their own. For dressy occassions (of which there's been two) I will wear them.
Swanny, of Barleyjuice, is more than happy to wear his with his thistle kilt hose and his black Chuck Taylor shoes. Now THERE'S a look! I personally think that flashes are more "functional" than an accessorizing splash of color... but that's just how one blind man sees it.

I only wear mine when I have my hose pulled up, as most have said.
Jimmy, in your statement above, are you saying green flashes with green socks, or green flashes with green kilt?
I personally like a flash that stands out from the sock. Isn't that why they are called flashes in the first place?

D'oh!
Clarification would be necessary with that one! I like the flashes to mimic the BASE color of the kilt... if not the same tartan in the flashes. I like for my kilt hose to mimic the lightest color in the lines for the tartan, or the most prominent line color in certain cases.
Nice catch.

I agree with Sir Graham here, I don't normally wear them without a jacket.
But that's just my opinion, I suggest you please yourself entirely!

Yep, I wear mine all the time, especially as I also wear a heavy skian dubh.
BTW I made my own from material I got from a craft shop.
