OK, at the risk of sounding like a lecture, if you really like The Real McKenzies music, you should Buy The CD . Now, I really don't have a problem downloading and/or ripping music to burn if it is from a big-name artist. They sign multi-million dollar deals with record companies (and advertisers for that matter). But the small "independent" bands really need the monetary support that record and merchandise sales give them. Especially with this Scottish-Rock genre, we need to support them! So, please at least think about showing them how much you like them by spending a little cash for their goods, OK?

"ripping" means "I put my CD into the computer and copied them to my PC" - To rip a CD you have to actually have it in the first place. Ripping your own CDs is perfectly legal.

Yes, I know what "ripping" is, that is why I made a distinction between ripping and downloading. ("ripping" means I put A (not necessarily MY) CD into the computer and copied it to my PC).And I mentioned nothing about the legality of doing it. But, why I said anything in the first place, was that I asked him a question about the order of the tracks on his CD, and he couldn't give me an answer. Therefore I assumed (and yes, I should know better!) that he had ripped someone elses CD and did not have the actual CD.

i have been outta work since march as i had an accident on the job and broke both wrists-wcb is not cuttin it when it comes to the finances. i am about to lose my truck and dont know where my rent is going to come from. i have been eating kraft dinner everday for the past month. if i had the 24.99 plus taxes to buy the cd i would. hell they are a local band and i would love to support them. so i ask, because i am very poor at the moment should i be denied access to good music?

Don't try and justify it, theres too many people here who will tell you "It's wrong" regardless of circumstance.
Fact is, it's illegal regardless of your financial situation.
Fact is I've been known to download music or rip other peoples cds, so you won't find judgement from me.
However, for small bands and those I truly wish to support, I do buy their CDs. Without that and concert tickets, they cannot afford to keep making the music I like.
Not to turn this into a thread on pirating music, but the reasons behind why I do it, and why I feel that it's NOT hurting the music/movie/video game industry nearly as bad as they scream it is, is that for myself, and I'd imagine a vast majority of everyone else who downloads music/movies/games, if I wanted it I'd have bought it. There's not a single song, video game, or movie I've downloaded that I'd have bought if it weren't available for download. I may have rented the movie (and I do, in fact, with Netflix), might have borrowed the game if I knew someone who had it, or woulda just listened to the radio for the songs. I downloaded it because it was convienent, NOT because I wanted it badly enough that I'd have paid for it but it was free here instead. My mom offered to let me rip her Tartan Terrors CDs from the PA Ren Faire, but I bought copies anyway, because I wanted to support them, and because it's something I'd have bought. I've downloaded misc celtic music online just to give it a listen. Most has been deleted, and if I couldnt have downloaded it, I wouldn't have bought it regardless.
But thats just me.
Sorry for derailing this off-topic, but I figured it was already derailed when I hopped on

i am not trying to justify anything-what i do is no ones business anyway. i just posted what i did so that the next time him or anyone else decides to give a lecture maybe they will think about the persons situation first and then decide not to.
ps: i also believe that it ISNT illegal to 'rip' cds, its the same as putting your cd to casette. hence the taxes that were slapped onto blank tapes and cds. what is illegal is to make it available to thousands to download.

That is exactly what I was saying. I honestly don't care about the legality of ripping/downloading, just the support that needs to be given to "starving musicians!
And Mike, I am sorry about your current situation, I hope you will be back on your feet soon. And yes, it definitely sounds like your cash should be going to other places first before CD's. Best of luck to you!
