I believe that there is a distinction between a dress sporran and an evening sporran. A dress sporran can be as simple as one made of fur. An evening sporran is one that is much fancier—and more expensive.
I've come to believe that a sporran can express the personality of the wearer. Thompson certainly felt that 'cook cutter' sporrans were the bottom layer of sporrans. Currently my favorite sporran is made of skunk, and has brought a smile to the face of many people. Since it's fur it can be worn for semi-formal and formal times.

Head on over to the Thistle and Shamrock in Marina Square (Denver Tech Center) on Bellview and Ulster. They have many sporrans on hand, and can get some fairly quick.

Frank and Cheryl are great people.
When they were downtown I used to drop in fairly frequently: but I don't get over to the Tech Center much at all anymore.
While I'm sure the kilt police won't call it a dress sporran, you should check out Freelander's. Mine is far nicer than my "Dress" sporran, and it actyally holds stuff to boot. http://home.c2i.net/kilted_1/public_html/main.html
