Alright, I got it now. What it all boils down to is that you guys can pull it off and I just look like an idiot when I try it. I look like a bad 80's flashback, complete with leg warmers. It's like Mr. Clean meets Olivia Newton-John... wearing a kilt and steel-toes.

but Newton-John was so hot...if you're close you're going to be okay.

It comes down to confidence. You've got several choices: low socks worn right, rolled/folded down or pushed down; knee socks either thick or thin, any colour; and no socks. Try them all, compare to the pics in that section. See which one is you for where you are. Context is everything. In the extreme summer heat, I just wear sandals, in court I wore off-white wooly knee socks. (With my kilt)

got a teenage daughter, ask her, with patience, maybe it's not the socks at all that are throwing off the look.

Anyway, relax. Prepare to crash and burn, read Riverkilt's recent thread. Before you go into anything new kilted just close your eyes and imagine a giant claymore strapped to your back. (just to stop the soldier boys, I mean the sharp kind, the other kind are not relaxing to have on your back.) Most people will see you with that image too.

Archangel, I heartily endorse that approach. I have found that if I keep in mind that I am doing something that most people are too timid to do, even though we are only talking about wearing an article of clothing, that my confidence never wavers. Will post a thread later about this weekend's "harrowing" (not!) everyday activities wearing the kilt.

Just a question. Are you using hose or soccer type socks, or are you using long boot socks. I find that the rib pattern inside the hose is almost identical to that outside especially from 5-6 feet away.
I usually roll or fold the top down once or twice, depends on the length of the hose, then push the rest down to my boot top.

I wear many different types of shoes so I wear my hose many different ways

    Gillies? well ....self explanitory

12" high wildland firefighting boots ( look up "whites boots" and you'll see what I mean ) I wear regular calf high socks just peeking over the top of the boot

regular shoes, ( ankle high) .....depends on the mood.... usually hose up , or down ..... if down, folded like you would if wearing them up , and just pushed off the calves to fall where they may

I don't know. Olivia looked pretty hot around then. Although I'm having a hard time combining that image with Mr. Clean ... Yikes!!!

Exactly my point. Yikes!! pretty much sums it up.

Mike, I wear kilt hose. I find that they are just too thick to pull it off. They truely look like leg warmers when I push them down. I think I am going to go with short black socks rolled to the cuff of my back boots. That ought to kill the Olivia Newton-John look for me.

If I'm wearing proper kilt hose, I wear them over the calf.

If I want the "shorter socks and hiking boots" look, I wear shorter socks. I bought some Dr. Scholl's diabetic socks at Walmart that are perfect. They come in a couple of colors, including oatmeal, they're longer than crew socks but shorter than kilt hose, and they're as comfortable as can be.

I push, not roll, them down. They look great.
