Sofar I only have a stillwater and I wear it with the thick belt above my hips. It seems to fit best when I let it rest on top of my hips. Of course any lower and the gets below my knee caps.

WHAT??? The pleats go in the back? Next you'll be telling me the sporran doesn't hang around your neck!!! Silly man...

My sport kilt definitely is meant to hang on my hips. My SWK is so awesome though...I think, although I have yet to try a UK, that I like the traditional belly-button cut better.

I like a high waist. Hip huggers just make me think of the way a catholic schoolgirl would wear it

Not that that is a bad thought, but the thought of a man dressed as a catholic schoolgirl makes me a little sick to my stomach

hehe, j/k I think the UK's and things like them look ok with the low waist. Tarten kilts just don't look right that way, or at least I don't think they do.

Oh, so something else came to mind. I'm aware that I'm a chronic sloucher (really, I have back problems that make sitting bolt upright painful), and I was wondering (probably from any other slouchers out there) if a high-waisted kilt doesn't tend to bunch up or look mussy/crumpled/have the apron all flat and funny-looking over top of bunched up fabric?

ok I have a question for my fellow belly men. I have a long torso and have been told I am lucky for that in terms of traditional kilts. My first true waisted kilt is on it's way to me and I am wondering from those with experience...I have a belly, not huge but large enough to annoy me LOL. what happens when you sit? doesn't it want to slide up or down? I mean bellys curve, or do you cinch tight so it is like dare I say, a girdle? please help me here. that is the only thing I am worried about with it. plus I have seen men with bellys wearing sporrans that hang below their belly and it REALLY accentuates it.

    Cheers

Depending on how I sit the belt usually slides up my belly. I do have the problem with teh lower belly sporran thing. It is one of the two unflattering things about my kilted experiance. I use a leather belt on the last notch to let the sporran sit where it will hold the kilt down when I am sitting (it does ok in that regard, but not good) but when it sits there it kinda frames my belly between my belt and the sporran.

At 5'8" and 170lbs I shouldnt have *that* much of a belly but I think I have a fairly high body fat percentage due to no workout to speak of and not watching what I eat (though I avoid mashed potatoes when I can and I have given up pop all together, I replaced it with black tea, juice, milk with ovaltine (the only way it won't upset my stomache), and the occasional coffee).

The other unflattering aspect of the kilt is without the tapered waist the pleats are pushed out and spread a little at my butt. So for me, my stillwater accentuates my butt and lower belly, though it is the only garment I have that never touches my shoes, so over the winter I should develop a hint of a tan if I wear it often enough.

At the navel, or slightly above. It just feels right. Even with a UK or other contemporary, I like them long enough to wear at the navel or just over it. Maybe it's just my nod to tradition----but it looks right and feels right to me.

Many ways to skin a cat.

I have both styles, but vastly prefer the lower 'off the hips' kilts. To me the so-called traditional waist is practically what the ladies refer to as an empire waist and I do not care for it.
