Well, she gave me a very snide "oh, do you play the bagpipes then?" I practically had to bite my toungue not to say "no, but would you like to play mine?" Jewddha,
That girl is interested in you.
The snotty girls I remember in high school wouldn't deign to look at you unless they were interested in you. Smile at her confidently next time you pass by her. See what happens.
And, as an afterthought; the snotty girls are usually just the same as the other girls when you get to know them.

(Please indulge me for a little crack-pot psychology for a minute). It helps to realize that the "jerk" is probably quite amazed that you are secure enough to go out in a kilt. He is probably also trying to deal with the realization that he is nowhere near that secure, and is attacking you to draw attention away from his own insecurity. Follow me?

With that in mind, I find this approach works very nicely:

Look around at the crown for a second, then say, "It seems like most of the ladies here are wearing pants. So what I'm wondering is, why are YOU dressed like a woman?"

The Best way to treat jerks is not to do a thing. Just pretend you don't hear them, and they will just go away. They will also realise how stupid they look and how other sane people are looking down at them.

In that age group, sometimes ignoring them will be taken as a sign of fear, and will encourage the rest of their pack to jump in as well, and if he just walks away, they'll consider him an easy target the next time. A confident response, regardless of the type, is better than no response at all, and I think the fact that he's even considering it says that he has the confidence to pull it off.

Whatever you do though, be ready to back your play.

I have to agree with you Raphael. That worked every time for me in the past (curiously, it has not happened to me for a very long time now .... or maybe I genuinely don't hear them!). If I confronted the blighter(s), it inevitably gave them encouragement and made their behaviour worse!

I have a whole page on my site that is filled with combacks and responses to "the question." Many of them I have gotten here over the past few months.

For those that have not checked it out, it is at: http://www.kiltday.com/thequestion.htm

    Enjoy!

That's the great thing about getting older, the hearing also gets older!

I was entering a pub with my wife for a meal on Saturday night, there were a group of men at a table who, when they saw me all began sniggering among themselves. I knew a comment was coming.

I actually did hear :-D as I walked past the single word "Mcdrafty". It was too childish to respond too so I ignored it.

It's good being in the company of others, when I forsee a potential idiot I often turn to me wife, or whoever I'm with and engage them in conversation as an excuse not to pay any attention to comments received.

In spite of that, I am amazed at how accepted I am in business kilted.
I meet new clients all the time, in offices, workshops, factories and rarely get a comment, lots of looks though!

Usually when asked why I'm wearing a kilt I say it's for religious reasons - Jesus didn't wear pants. Sometimes it's hard to keep a straight face!

Recently I was asked why the kilt and I just said "To avoid arrest for indecent exposure". Left the poor guy looking very confused.

good one for churches!! I've often used it. Trouble is, Jesus wore a seamless robe, my kilt has seams ;)
