Another polite one I've been using that seems to satisfy the curious is,
" I sit for a living and I'm much more comfortable sitting kilted all day." No need to explain why...

Hi Jim
I am Scottish and proud of my Heritage I live in Central Scotland and it's nice to know that the Kilt is worn Worldwide
In reply to your question you could try telling them that only a "Numpty" dos'nt know the difference between a Kilt and a skirt.
Numpty person of low intelligence not to bright. a typical Scottish word
If any one asks if anything is worn under the Kilt you reply no it,s all in working order

I recently had a woman walk up to me in a store when I was with my wife and ask the same thing. My simple reply was "Lipstick!" My wife smirked (I have about 4 different comebacks that I rotate) and the woman looked confused for about 3 seconds and then it caught up to her. She turned bright red and started laughing...My wife just grinned...knowing the REAL secret!

For those that have not checked it out, it is at: http://www.kiltday.com/thequestion.htm
Enjoy!
Motorman,
Are you a bike cop? I rode our Harley for 3 of my 20 years on the job. Just retired in July.
That Kilt Day link was awesome. I'm new to the kilt too and enjoy the heck out of it. The snappy comeback part will come in handy. Thanks!

Ok, maybe I am dense, but I understand every reply I have ever seen to "the question" except this one. Does it indicate that there is a, ummmh how do I say this, aaaahh "ring" of lipstick left around the "appendage" in question from a former question asker, or SO?
Be gentle, this answer has bothered me for a while because I am not sure what is implied, and therefore why it would be used.

Yep, you've got the idea lad. Just carry that thought to it's logical conclusion and you'll have it.

Yes, I've been a motorcop for the past 7 of my 20 years in law enforcement. I appreciate the complements on my site. I set it up for guys that are new to the kilt, to help encourage and inform. If you have gotten anything worthwhile from it, then I am pleased.
KCW, As for lipstick... yes, she leaves a ring, we're not talkin' about applying it down there ourselves.

Here are a couple of comebacks I use (as if a dude were asking you why you're wearing a skirt).
1. So your girlfriend can get a hold of a real man easier.
2.So I can teabag you after I've kicked your @$$.
