Just as a personal preference, I don't like the way kilts look without belts. Even with a waistcoat, it just looks "unfinished." Without a waistcoat, a kilt without a belt just looks bad.
I'm not sure what Shay is talking about with the sporran. It should be on its own chain belt with formal and on its own leather strap with casual/day dress.
I've seen those sporran hangers that attach to a regular belt. They look like Hell.
Just opinions, of course. That's what most of this stuff is.

Thank you, I thought it was the things that look like hell you were talking about- the one time I've seen a full kit on a mannequin, it had the belt and chain- probably so they could sell both!

Belts...a Matter of Choice
Like many things a kilt with or without a belt it is a matter of choice. If you look at some of the older pictures the kilt is worn up just under the rib cage. In this case a belt is not possible. The more recent practice (20 years) a belt is common, especially a Clan belt for formal wear.
In "So You're Going To Wear The Kilt" (3rd revised edition) page 71, "Belts are now being worn any time one chooses."
I perfer a belt but this is personal...so if the belt fits wear it...if you want.

I always were my belt, even with a waist coat. If someone comments (which know one ever has), I might be inclined to ask them why they are focusing in on the area around m' sporran so closely.

for what it's worth, part of my upbringing was that the belt was what separated the men's kilt from the women's. Daughter caught me yesterday without a belt and pointed out the inappropriateness. Where does she get that from?
Note that the army style kilt has a really high waist. A belt helps split the visual.
I usually wear an army surplus web belt. The colours match and it doesn't draw attention to itself. My clip on knife is worn inside the belt.
Grand-dad said the sporran should be low enough to help modesty when sitting. I don't like the belt strap hanger things, that's me. Quite a lot of sporrans I see are positioned too high.

I actually quite like the "no double belts" look of the sporran sling, at least with a casual kilt, and I really don't like the kilt belt w/ a sporran belt in PC mode-I think the lines are much cleaner w/out a belt trapped under the vest.
Bryan...different strokes, eh?...

For those of us with spare tires, those hanging sporran thingies are horrible. They hang about an inch or two out away from the kilt, and each step causes it to swing back and forth and hit you in the twig and berries. I tried to think of a nice way of putting this, I hope this is acceptable. They are a wretched idea, and the person responsible for their creation is in need of a swift kick in the hind end.
And with a slight topic shift... I need to find a good belt. The one I ordered from USA kilts, well, the area where it folds over and holds the buckle, the leather split away from the metal buckle bit thingy from all the strain. Second belt I bought did the same thing. I need a belt where the leather wont split where it strains on the metal loop thingamabob that holds the buckle to the belt. I guess I need a big thick strap of a belt. I do a lot of movement while kilted. Sitting, breathing, bending, climbing stairs, etc, and all of this movement really has torn my belt up. Any good belt recommendations?
