    help with pleat spacing

I am planning on making a kilt but have a question as far as pleat spacing goes. Its gonna be a casual kilt but will 4cm spacing with 11cm under pleat spacing work?
    thanks

I all depends on what you want the finished kilt to look like and swing like.

On the Freedom Kilt Cargo Model the pleat 'reveal' (That part you see) is 2" / 5.5cm wide. The distance from 'out'(convex) pleat to the next 'out' pleat is 10" / 25.4cm. (This is called the Sett on tartans) Which gives a pleat depth of 4" / 12cm.

On the Casual and Dress Models the reveal is 1" and sett is 7" which gives a depth of 3".

Be advised though, that with this generious a pleat the total amount of fabric for a Casual Kilt is in excess of 8.5 yards. It does give a true kilt swish to it though.

As a rule of thumb your pleat depth should be 3 - 4 times greater than the reveal.

    I wear the kilt because:
    Swish + Swagger = Swoon.

Then I'll let others give you their good advice! I'm one of those "tartan-only" kiltmakers!

    traditional and contempoary kiltmaker

for a casual kilt mark every 6 inches this is then the centre of each pleat this gives a good swing and also a good amount of pleats.
