I moved home during the summer and am now down on the South Coast of England, west of Southampton. I determined that my new neighbors could see me as I am, rather than be conventional and "come out" later. Thus I have been wearing my kilts out and about.
The reactions have all been sooo positive. Neighbors have said how much they like to see me and enquired about tartans etc. People in church also admired, enjoyed and complimented. Many of the men thought it was a good idea to wear a kilt in the warm weather. One older lady (wearing trousers) thought it was good for a man to have the courage to wear a skirt. She related her early experiences about wearing trousers, which in a way were encoraging too. She thought that fashion freedom is a two way street.
I guess that the area might have something to do with it as the blue collar area is far away. Any abuse I have received in the past has come from what one might call socially disadvantaged types. Having said that I have worn the kilt in the 'big city' and only received one comment - a guy in a white van leaned out when passing and shouted the inevitable "Och Aye the noo".
So all in all I just love it here
