wearing the kilt backward

As I was leaving the Richmond games this afternoon I saw a guy (I'm guessing he might have been between 18 and 20). When I first saw him from the front, something appeared to be wrong with his kilt. As I passed by I realized what it was. It was some kind of (excuse the "S" word here) SKIRT. It had no front aprons and no pleats at all, and no taper. It was wrapped around and appeared to be fastened on the right side with Velcro. As for whether it was on backwards or not, I couldn't say. However even a Sportkilt worn backwards would have been better. I thought of taking a pic and posting it with the face blanked out, but decided against it.

Probably makes sense to the uneducated kilt wearer...sit on the part without the pleats, keep the pleats in good shape...

A few years ago at the Long's Peak Highland Games, I saw a guy wearing a cotton tartan cloth wrapped around his waist. No apron, no pleats and not much of an overlap. It appeared to be held on by a cheap belt. His torso was covered with a cheap grey sweatshirt. Soiled running shoes and low top black socks set off the ensemble. It was only moderately breezy and he was having trouble with his make-shift tartan sarong taking flight. I about fell over laughing after we got far enough away to be out of earshot. What are these guys thinking?

It's a start, and I think it takes some special kind of nerve to pull it off.

You guys are right. I am convicted by your comments about my lack of compassion. I am certainly not qualified to judge anyone in such matters. My apologies to everyone here and to the brave lads who have done their best in wearing the kilt. I stand corrected and ask your forgiveness.

Was it a tartan table cloth?

I guess you could call it tartan, but I would call it more of a plaid cloth, similar to what you might see in a flannel shirt. I tried not to stare, but I it seemed to me to be more of two or three color combination, and mostly red. I totally missed the word table in your question. No I don't think it was a table cloth. It was more like someone had bought a piece of material and wrapped it like a skirt. Kiltedmanxman's comment about "a makeshift Sarong" seems more appropiate. I'm beginning to think Highland games and festivals should have a manditory class for novice kilt wearers. I know that my wearing of the kilt isn't perfect, but it's a darn sight better than that. I wonder if Hank would mind if I made up some simple XMARKS cards to hand out to people like that so "WE" can educate them online.
