Kilt jackets
Bob you are right a "TUX" has the silly velvet lapels. The coats most often worn as "black tie" and considered to be a "TUX" by most American is not far removed from a sport coat. I was a best man at my cousin's wedding and the rental "TUXes" were the most horrible things that you could imagine. To be honest they were costume caractures of a badly drawn tux.
The problem we kilt wearing folks run in to is almost all jackets and coats are too long to wear with a kilt. The fact is that short jackets went out of style at the end of the Second World War and the wartime shortages/rationing. I have no problem with military looking jackets being a Soldier but for the most part a short civillian jacket would be more appropriate with a kilt.
I have a nice tan sport coat conversion that will be my next sewing project after a three color desert camouflage kilt.
I love the Prince Charlie, the doublets, and the Argyle jackets but they are neither casual nor business wear.
