Oh, and I'm certainly not knocking anyone for going out and purchasing this jacket/waistcoat set. As soon as I have $300 saved up I'm ordering one for myself!
I guess I probably won't get much use out of it on the backpacking trip though....
Yes, Andrew, I am guessing it it not such an essential accessory on the Applalachain rail, or the other trails that you hike. Would love to do some of your hikes myself!

for me they are a luxury to be bought only after a decent number of kilts have been aquired. Kilts come first!
I'll not wear mine often, but it will be useful when I do need it. I rarely go to formal occasions (anything more than casual is formal) but it's nice to know I can hold my own at such an event.

Yeah, I think the waistcoat would bind under the shoulder straps of the pack, and the jacket isn't cut to let me swing my hiking poles in my arms. ;)
Of course, I wouldn't be the first to attempt an "expedition" in a tweed coat. George Mallory and Andrew Irvine attempted to summit Mt. Everest in 1924. They weren't successful, though, so maybe I won't wear my Scottishkilts.net jacket and waistcoat up Everest.
