I get exactly 2 channels of TV (no cable connections for me, TYVM), and just started watching the "glass teat" at home again last autumn (helped take my mind off the agony of chemotherapy).

Like Blu, I have never seen an episode of "Monarch," although I have heard many good reports. In a couple of years, when used DVD copies are available at a reasonable cost, perhaps I'll have a look-see. Until then, most of my disposable income will likely continue to go either for Guinness, whisky or those tartan things that many of us rave on about, here.

Glass teat, you MUST be a Harlan Ellison fan from way back. ;)

Yay, bubba! I was hoping someone would recognize that reference. As much as I enjoyed some of Harlan's sf writing, I think his non-fiction works have impressed me more.

Oh yeah. I remember his television column. Heck, I think I've read almost everything he published, fiction or nonfiction. I met him once years back and he was a riot. Quick wit and when called for a savage sense of humor.

Is this MOTG a show that I can rent an episode or two, assuming I can find it, and get an idea of what the series is like, or do I have to have at least part of a season to get into it?

    Monarch

I, too, am saddened by the end of Monarch. While I thought it lost its way after Hector’s death, I felt it found it after Paul appeared. I enjoyed the show so much that I got Blackwell’s to send me the book. When the whole series comes available, I’ll get it and enjoy a wee dram in front of the fire too.

It is currently playing at 5pm (est) Mon-Fri on BBC America.
Some PBS stations carry it as well.
As for renting it, you might try a local library.
Our county library has seasons 1 and 2 on DVD that can be
    checked out.
It is a great show but to me the best parts are the kilts and
    the beautiful secenry.

You can certainly get an idea of the show but if you like it
a little you will find it quite addictive.

YOU watched 'The Bill', Graham?!! Well, you DO surprise me! I thought I had an element of poor taste when it comes to TV viewing, but 'The Bill'! Huhhh! I'm afraid I have always thought of it as a grim 'soap' - but then I never got 'into' it at all.

As you have said, there was nothing offensive about 'Monarch'. Just good, simple, entertainment often with great 'costumes', but always with great scenery!

    the Bill

yes Hamish, I'm ashamed to say that I used to watch it. It was good once, long ago, and remember the UK is way ahead of us in the series.

I've given it up now, it was tough, but I had to

    The standards are at half-mast.

But, sadly the BBC created a pale pastiche of Compton McKenzie's masterpiece.

I never got over the loss of Hector, a completely barking but loveable character.

The loss of the original cast (who turn up in cameo roles) and the inclusion of "viewable" actors, diminished the series for me.

What's next? A series based on that wonderful black and white film: Whisky Galore! ?

What else will they try and ruin next?
