Ever since I got my Freelander, I've been considering selling all my other sporrans. It is certainly nicer than any of the "E-bay" cheap sporrans I have seen.

Good questions, and I'm not sure there are any good answers, other than tradition.

Why is black more formal than powder blue?

So its a matter of me declaring that a powered blue sporran with a ruffled shirt is more traditional? Thanks. I think I have been around my questioning 14 year old too long. And I have also hijacked this thread long enough.

No good answer here. Heck I started the economioc principle thread.
Still might try to make one from a tanned skin.

Here's my problem? I think you're asking from the wrong end. When you say formal what do you mean? What will you be wearing to what kind of event? The sporran would be the smaller part of the bigger picture.
In nearly every case, the sporran you describe will be appropriate unless it is scruffy. The light ones from ebay would work but they're "artificial". I have three (black seal skin, black leather ebay, dark brown R-kilt) and would probably order another R-kilts' in black before I'd go to anything else for a formal.
