Daneel, I bought two of the first series, the pins were never that good, even Hank had concerns. Both of mine broke soon after using them and I've not bothered fixing them.
The answer would be to buy a spare pin from a craft store and glue it on after removing all of the old pin.
I have had trouble buying good strong pins

good job your kilt was ok. Find a hobby shop a place that deals with handycrafts . There are plenty I'm sure. There are lots of people that make their own stuff so have a look on the web or in your local yellow pages. Good luck.
