Snow is such a beautiful event! The first few snowfalls bring such a freshness about everything. Unfortunately people think they are invinceable and drive like it is still dry on the roads. Then the snow becomes something I do not cherish. Now if I could just stay in and watch the flakes fall, that may be a different story.

Here in the DC area it seems there are two types of people driving in the snow. The first are those who drive like nothing has happened, and the second are those who just creep along. In most cases when it snows, something between these two speeds is called for.

I do think that snow is beautiful when you can watch it out the window.

We're well on our way here too.

They are saying we may have snow on the benches (which is where my house sits) on down to the valleys by this weekend.

Heres a picture I took from my front porch this weekend.
You can see the snow has allready hit the mountain.

BTW that makes me wonder. SWK told me that they might have a heavyweight wool kilt in my size within about two weeks. That was three weeks ago now, and it's now to cold to wear my canvas Kilt outside of the house.
C'mon, hurry hurry hurry already. :sad:

Dave, you've just described all of my neighbors. It's the same on this side of the river. (I'm in Reston). I don't claim to be an excellent snow driver but I DID learn to drive in it in suburban Chicago.

Here in north Ga. all you have to do is say the word snow to cause a major panic! Any thing over a quarter inch is a blizzard to us.

OK! OK! Cut it out guys... I'm missing my snowmobile bad enough... No, really I love snow! I can't wait to take the dog for a walk it it... He loves it too, but not for too long because of his short coat...

Not so beautiful stuff... when you have to get up extra early in the morning, shovel a quarter ton of the stuff by hand, then negotiate a treacherous, time consuming trip over rough snowpacked streets in the dark, just so you can spend the 8 or so hours of precious winter daylight in the office watching the road salt and ice accumulation eating away at you car... then drive home again in the dark to a driveway that city plows have filled in, shovel another few hundred pounds of snow from the end of the driveway, and flop down exhausted with a sore back wondering why you have no energy. Rest up cuz you'll likely have to do it again next morning... Yeehaww!

That's nothin'. Seattle shuts down when it looks like it might snow... :-) It also shuts down when the sun comes out, or when it rains. No one knows how to drive here, unless it's just cloudy. Even then, ya gotta wonder about people...

Well, it was a typical start to a Calgary winter. An inch of snow and all hell breaks loose. 123 collisions recorded between midnight and noon today, 1 of them fatal. Traffic was pretty much at a standstill for the entire morning rush. It's interesting to note that the majority of cars that went off the roads and into the ditches were 4x4 SUV's. Seems like the owners of such vehicles (I have one myself) seem to think that they are invincible in winter conditions. Fun fun!!
On the plus side...aside from running really late, I had no issues at all with my first foray into ice and snow with a 40' transit bus. It handled the road conditions better than I expected. Might not be such a scary winter after all.
