Just can't win
Been saving up for my next kilt purchase. Planning on a blue denim lined PK and was going to order this week. Now Jeff is temporarly out of the game.
So, I think to my self, I'll order a 5 yard heavy weight tartan from Scottishkilts.net, they have had some good feedback here receintly. But they don't seem to have any tartan that I want (trying to keep some kind of relationship to the tartan even though I have none to my tank). Aberdeen, nope (a tartan police book says that someone with my last name should only wear this), Thompson (mother's maiden name) of any kind, no, and forget the Kentucky or US Army (not surprising since they are in Scotland). Still they claim to have 1000 tartans for crying out loud.
I check out Avance Highland - same deal.
www.scottishclansman.com has the tartans in light weight 4 yard that costs more that the 5 yard heavy weight from the first two kiltmakers, so that sucks.
Alexis Malcom has the Army tartan at least (don't know about others since they have no tartan list) tartans, but their 5 yard heavy weight is over $130 more in price. Same with the kilt store (even with our discount). I can actually get Kentucky if I'm willing to pay $423 for a 5 yard machine stitched kilt. Side note our discount at the kilt store means almost cr@p. They say that they have 5 yard kilts starting at $185, but once you start looking at tartans, the cheapest one I have found so far is $278 for 11 oz (with our discount) and most are $3-400 (again for a 5 yard machine stitched).
So basically I can just buy a tartan that I like for a reasonable price, or I can buy "My" tartan (one of them) and be screwed out of an extra $150-250 just to please the tartan police.
Very frustrating.

I have the perfect solution.
Since Jeff is out of the picture for the time being, just continue saving for another couple weeks/months. Put the money you have set aside now together with however much more you need for that 16 oz MacEwen tank ;)

Why worry about the "Tartan police". How mant times so experts like Mac Newsome have to say, "wear what you want to wear". Now if you are trying to stick with tartans to which you have some connections because that's what you feel is right, then stick to your beliefs. However, if you contact many of the clan societies, you'll find that many if not most don't mind if you wear their tartan. I did that myself before I bought my first kilt.

While I have always been a proponant of "Wear whatever tartan you like", I would still like some connection to it. At a Celtic fest this summer I saw one of the most beautiful tartans I have ever seen, but I have no connection to it. Yes I could get it, but I really don't want to.

Adam, Avance has MacThomas, Campbell & Aberdeen, about $225

Scottishkilts.net, well you used to be able to search by price. They do have a half dozen or so tartans close to the low end. Big run stuff like Black Watch & MacDonald.
Hope that helps.

Last night neither site had Aberdeen listed, today both do. I'm losing my mind. Don't know what weight though. I guess I'll have to e-mail and ask.

That must be the Jura range, which does seem to be more limited than the other wool kilts. I would email David McSweeney and see what they have in the http://scottishkilts.net/products/5_...yard_kilt.html
It also looks like they have changed their kilt offerings abit over the weekend.
Good luck with your search. Have you also checked out our sponsor The Kilt Store?

From my original post

And it wasn't just the jura range, I used their tartan finder to see what I could get. Aberdeen wasn't listed Friday, but is now (still waiting to see what weight), Thompson Grey (or any Thompson for that matter) - not listed, no Kentucky (though they do have California which I could wear, I just don't like it), of course no US Army, but I think that is an Alexis Malcom propriatary tartan.
