Welsh Cilt

Well, after all the posts by Derek and with Hamish getting his Welsh Cilt, I had to go ahead and order my own. I've ordered it from the Kilt store and it's in the Edwards tartan (my mother's maiden name). It looks like it will be sent out in mid-January, so I should have it in plenty of time for St. David's Day on the 1st of March.

I'm going to have to quit reading this forum. You guys are making me spend too much money!!

Is it just me, or is anyone else transposing those middle 2 letters whenever they see the word cilt? I'm finding it very distracting. Especially since there are no words in the English language that start with 'ci' where the 'c' is pronounced like a 'k'. (Incedentally, that goes for words that start with 'ce', too) Is there a linguistic reason of some sort to spell the word with a 'c' when it's a kilt being worn by a Welshman? Is it a different garment? I apologize if this was explained already. I missed it.

Basically, Cilt is the Welsh word for Kilt. It's the same basic garment.

Well, Dave, you will look very handsome in that tartan, I should think.

I wonder if there are adverse affects on a man's health when he joneses for weeks on end...

On a linguistic note, in Gaelic & in Welsh, there are no soft c's. They are always hard, regardless of the vowel that follows.

Tell me about it: I've got an 8 yard cilt in the Williams tartan due to arrive the middle of January. My only concern is that it's in the 13 oz wool, and I wonder if that might not be a bit "light" with the gusty winds we enjoy hereabouts.

Bryan...gonna buy a *reeeeeeally* heavy kilt pin, I guess...
