A Question for the Kiltmakers
... and for anyone else who has some good input.
Could a blanket like this one, cut in half lengthways and sewn end-to-end, be used to make a kilt? That would provide a 27" by 4 yd strip of material. With a 34" waist, 41" hips, and 24" hip-to-knee measurement, that should be enough material, shouldn't it?
Next question - am I just crazy, slightly crazy, off my rocker, or full-blown NUTS to even consider this idea?;) I'll admit to embracing the stereotype of the tight-fisted, penny-pinching, pry-the-wallet-open-to-get-money-out Scot, so I find the idea of getting the material for a (very-)heavyweight 4-yd kilt for just $50 very appealing. BUT if you all can give me some good reasons not to consider this ... well, Scots are stereotypically practical too.

No, your not nuts.Just addicted. I know what you mean,I got an alpaca wool blanket for christmas last year. I thought about making a kilt from it but decided not to.
Being nuts, slightly nuts etc. is normal around here. The real crazies are the ones wearing pants.

I remeber that thread - the blanket wasn't a tight enough weave, right?
I remember searching for "alpaca wool" after dealing with alpacas at work one night.

I think it would be tough to get a kilt that you were happy with from blanket fabric, not only because of the thickness but also because it's not a very tight weave.

I've just thought of a use for blanket material- kilt liners.

You guys are a riot (& I mean that in a good way--honest).
Wompet, you addict you, you can make a nice, snuggly jacket out of it, if you really want to wear the blanket. Easier yet would be a poncho.

Wompet, you'll have some pretty wide pleats... but it's possible. ALSO, you'll want to sew the pleats as securely as possible since the broad weave will easily pull out. The fabric itself will be a little rugged on the backside in time. It's actually worth a try if you have the disposable funds to spend!
