I like the high waisted jackets better with kilts too. Another option from the military flight jacket look is the letterman style jackets.
I'm having a ball wearing my War 2 RAF replica battlejacket from What Price Glory. Added sergeant's stripes and U.S.A. shoulder flashes so its a replica of what my father wore as a Flying Sergeant in the RAF. Very high waisted though so works best with high waisted kilts.

Just saw a photo of a guy in a Utilikilt and a Hawaiian shirt. Have been struggling to make that look work. Think he found the answer. He wears the Hawaiian shirt open with a t-shirt that matches the color of the kilt. Think its in this month's UK Newsletter if I remember correctly.
Point is, using the galleries will give you great ideas and, a lot of places in my gallery, show you what to avoid
