I wear a sporran all the time. Most days I wear a simple leather sporran with a green and silver Maltese Cross on the front. It's big enough for my wallet and my tobacco kit. But I have a dressier one for church and a formal rabbit fur one for black tie events.
I feel rather naked without a sporran and I just wouldn't have places for my stuff without it. It also does wonders for keeping the front apron when I'm seated in my wheelchair.
Also, it makes it easier for others to recognize what you're wearing as a kilt.

I always wear a sporran with the kilt, even casual or sports kilts. Not wearing one to me would be like wearing trousers all day long with the zipper down.
