Well MrBill, in this case it looks like 10 bucks and a metal cantle! Seriously, the "full dress" is all fur, while the semi-dress is fur on leather. And the full dress does have the metal cantle, making it look more formal. It really depends on where you want to wear it. And personally, I am not a fan of the fur or animal face sporrans. Not a vegeterian or protect animal life thing, just don't care for the look. For formal wear, I think that a black leather sporran with metal cantle, chain, and possibly a crest on the flap looks very classy, especially with a black Argyll jacket. For me, being formal is often a case of the simplest, understated accessories.

If I wear a sporran, which is less than half the time, it's a plain leather with a bit of knotwork tooling & tassles for casual - no tie, or jacket. My semi-dress has a bit of fur in the front + nickle tassles that I wear with a shirt, tie & nice shoes to nice restaurants etc. The dress sporran with silver cantle I'll wear only with ghillies & jacket + bowtie & white shirt etc. once or twice a year for that... way too fancy for casual but I've seen it done.

I have 3 sporrans. There is one that is all leather with a green leather maltese cross and metal scroll work for regular day wear. I have a shiney leather one with metal canticle for semi-dress events. And I have a fur sporran for when I wear my Prince Charlie.

Needless to say, the full dress sporran gets worn only a few times a year. And the semi-dress isn't worn much more often.

For me, a fur sporran only looks appropriate if you are wearing the full Prince Charlie outfit. If you're wearing an argyle I say go for the semi-dress.

And I hate the animal head sporrans. To me they look grotesque - not to mention that I'd be afraid that my dog would attack my crotch!

I've got a Freelander for everyday use. I've been looking at hunting sporrans like this for dress wear, but I'm not sure I want to shell out $250 - $300.

I really like the one with the red background. It's much more unique than the all-black one.

And besides, it looks like good fire department colors!

I like the red one as well, but I think the black would be more versatile.

Dress Sporran = formal events (thanks, Ham)

    Semi Dress = semi-formal events

I hope these pictures are going to help you in selecting the right sporran for your new year party.

That guy really gets around, he is the same one modeling the Buchanan Kilt on the other thread.
