    Advice Needed-Brogues for Formal Wear

I'm assembling a formal kilt outfit. I've ordered the Argyll jacket, dress sporran, white hose and flashes. I know that brogues/wing tips are the recommended footwear. Since I went with an Argyll, I've decided against the Ghillies. In looking around eBay I've found brogues from the UK and wing-tips from the US, both in leather. I have also found patent leather tuxedo wing-tips for formal wear.

My inclination is for the genuine leather, but would the patent leather be acceptable or preferred for formal wear?

I agree, go with the real leather. To me, and this is just MHO, patent leather is far and away too ostentatious. I wore them in the military but only for inspections. I found they caused my feet to be overly hot and prespire...lots. If you really want to dress up the shoes go with the wingtips.

Besides, anything that shines and reflects that much would be indecent under a kilt.

That would at least make the formal event a lot more fun!

The only patent leather shoes I ever owned were for my fire department full dress uniform.

I say go with real leather wingtips if you can't get real ghillies or don't want to deal with the laces.

If you're not fond of the wing-tip pattern, Bostonian makes a nice, plain black leather dress shoe the the Men's Wearhouse carries (or they did, anyway). Not terribly expensive ($80 or so?), but so much more comfortable than I expected: if they ever wear out I'll buy another pair.

Bryan...still not sure about the Ghillies...

My vote is for the black wing tips, I wear them with the argyle. Around this time of the year there should be plenty of sales in progresss around your local mall. Don't forget to allow some extra room for those heavy wool kilt hose.

Now again, this is by my on personal likes. Looking at the two pair of shoes, I would go real leather with the traditional toe caps

    Brogues!

In the USA you call them wingtips...I noticed in "Kilt land" they call them regimental brogues.

    Brogues are classic shoes...they scream:

    STYLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
