Didn't you know that is what Hamish really looks like. I am not sure who the guy in Hamish's aviator is, but.............

Just kidding Hamish, you wear the kilt better than this guy does.

I know a Border Collie that attacks winter coats - because of the fur linings on the hoods. The idea of Dice The Devil Dog charging full tilt at my ...er, sporran is not a pleasant thought.

Back to the original question - there are three general levels of sporran "formality" - daywear, semi-formal, and formal. Daywear sporrans are the ones we use every day, casual use. Semi-formal sporrans are for evening wear and occassions when your beat-up, knocked-around day sporran may not give the best presentation - think of the redneck joke about wearing overshoe "barn boots" to church.

NOTE: I do not mean the previous remark as derogatory against rural people. I grew up outside of a town where such boots were a common sight on winter Sundays - I have no problem with dressing sensibly with regards to the climate. That minister's wife, now - she was city folk, and she just couldn't wrap her head 'round that notion. Back to the post...

Formal sporrans, with their metal cantles, would go with the black tie equivalent of highland dress. And for most of us, the cost of one would preclude the wearing of it except on special occassions.

So the hunting sporrans would be considered formal, despite their name?

I know you're "just kidding" Colin, and "this guy" is the official model for our friends, "KiltStore.net".

By the way, I know I am something of a high flyer, but as far as I know I don't have an aviator!! ;)

You're welcome Raph. but I see no photo. Methinks you borrowed an image from my album at IMFF - no problem there - but, for some reason, the images there no longer transfer to "X Marks..." . I tend to give a link to them nowadays, or 'publish' photos I have put especially into Photobucket. Ron has the same problem.

It was kind of you to think of me nevertheless.

Ham, I think that he was just crediting you with defining the appropriate events for each sporran. I did not see any links.
