As I've said before, to assume that the principal is some kind of beaurocratic ogre is really convenient but wrong. The tone of some of the earlier posts and copies of the emails sent to the guy were rather provocative and, let's face it, does it serve much purpose to alienate someone right off the bat before you've tried to find out what their side of the story is?
I sent an email early on which, I hope, was a reasonable request that these folks get together and try to reach an understanding based on the assumption that everybody is acting in good faith. The principal has responsibilities (least of which is keeping his job so he can feed his family) and has to try to balance the demandsof a lot of groups...I know several school administrators and it is a b******t job in many regards: no matter how hard you try, you can't make everybody happy.
You gotta ask yourself whether you're involving yourself in this matter because you want to see an amenable solution reached or if you enjoy acting insulted and are itchin' for a fight. Act accordingly.

Well put. There are always at least two sides to everything,,,sometimes more. It always pays to talk nice at first,(and ask questions),,,get tough later if the situation warrants it.

I suspect this thing is getting alot bigger than anyone ever expected it would. I'm sure nobody expected it to go beyond one evening or beyond the school. I think, in broader terms this is an indication that many people are getting tired of selective diversity and are now willing to step forward. This might be a good thing if the reaction is measured and intelligent.

That was my incentive for staying involved. The Scots have been an "invisible" heritage in this country for decades. The only way we will ever become a recognized cultural presence is by picking selected incidents and standing our ground. This looked like a spot were we can draw some attention, without being off the edge of the table.

Correct Bubba,
This is much bigger the anyone expected.
I think that the principle had to make a snap judgement call and it turned out to be the wrong call. A hornets nest was opened.
The lady I talked to said that she was sorry that the H.S. would be known
for this incident and not for all the good things.

Wow those folks are a bit rough.
I've got friends in Scotland that wear whatever they want with their kilts,
as it should be.
